George the Poet to perform at A Ka Dope

Spoken word art is not one of the most appreciated art forms in Uganda. That even when one of the world’s most respected poets at the moment is Ugandan, many don’t know.

Well, maybe you have read about George the Poet, a British spoken word artist of Ugandan heritage whose innovative brand of musical poetry has earned critical acclaim. For instance, in 2015, he was nominated for a BET Award, made the top ten of BBC’s Sound of 2015 and Brit Awards for Critic’s Choice.

Born George Mpanga, he has never forgotten his Ugandan roots, which probably explains why he always comes back for shows. On Friday, at the Design Hub, George the Poet will be one of the performers at the final edition of this year’s A Ka Dope.

George has done projects like Follow the Leader and Cat D where he uses cars to explain people and relationships. The show at Design Hub doesn’t seem to have supporting acts, as it seems will be all about him that night.

George the Poet late last month made news when he declined an honor from the queen becoming a Member of the British Empire (MBE) noting that the British Empire’s activities were evil.
