Romeo and Juliet play to be staged in Kampala

Thousand of performances of William Shakespeare’s plays have been staged since the end of the 16th century.  One of his pieces Romeo and Juliet was  written about 1594–96 but  wasn’t perfomed until  1604 in England when the play took to theatre in Nördlingen – German  as its shortened and simplified version was performed later to spread to the world.

Apparently, a group comprised of young artists left Uganda early July this year, for Germany to rehearse and perform Romeo and Juliet in Kampala. Following the annual theater – cultural exchange and collaboration will be staging the play in a couple of shows around Kampala.

The team that is comprised of theatre poet Peter Kagayi Ngobi,  Tekya Abramz,  Bryan  Byamukama ,and Pamela Keryeko among others under the direction of Germany’s Simon Eifler and Uganda’s Peter Kagayi Ngobi, the group is set to present “Romeo and Juliet in Kampala” in 4 art spaces in Kampala.

The shows will take place this month at One54 in Bunga on 18th, then at the Uganda Museum on Saturday 19th, a community show at Tender Talents Management School – Kasangati on Sunday 20th and finally at the Goethe-Zentrum Kampala rooftop on 24th October.

According to Actress Pamela Keryeko, the creatives were brought together by Ugandan arts producer, Andrew Ssebaggala of House of Talent East Africa and German theater director, Simon Eifeler of Fred – Freies Ensemble Dussledorf, under their annual theater/ cultural exchange and collaboration undertaking.
