Kenya’s Nazizi shuts down her favourite party

Nazizi has always confessed her love for the Nyege Nyege vibe. “Over the years, I’ve been attending the festival as part of the audience, and today, am performing on the stage,” she said shortly after getting on stage.

Nazizi, also known as the First Lady is one half of Kenyan reggae group Necessary Noise and also part of the East African Bashment Crew that also had local artiste Bebe Cool.

She was performing on the final day, and, considering the fact that many Ugandans had left to catch up with their Monday duties, her audience was mostly Kenyan, who had rode from Nairobi in big numbers.

A rapper with a reggae vibe, Nazizi did a number of songs that took us through the memory lane of not only her journey but even those she has crossed paths with.

On songs like ‘Bless Ma Room’, she reminded us of days when East Africa was yet to fully warm up to reggae music, yet on others like Kenyan Boy Kenyan girl, she told us the beauty in embracing what we are.

It was a defining moment when she had to jam with Ugandan artiste Van Data and dancer Walter Riva.

She ended her set with a song she noted Ugandans would hate her for not performing, ‘Fire Anthem’, leaving her audience satisfied.

The festival ended on this morning with only one stage and the Boiling Room still active.
