A’shaan: Lango’s queen bee

Lucky Angom aka A’shaan

Rap goddess: A’shaan, real name Lucky Angom, is one of the popular hip hop entertainers in northern Uganda. She has won several awards including best female rapper and now shares her music journey with Isaac Otwii.

Tell us about your music journey
I started singing in 2013. Being born and raised in Lira shaped me into a disciplined and hardworking artiste. I do a range of genres including rap and my sound is unique.

What are some of your songs?
An Atom, Akello, Run it, Where The Party At, Wine Up, Let’s Party, No Teenage Pregnancy, Money Can’t Buy, Amari, Abulani (ft Okeng Borntown), Acam So Na and other songs to be released soon.

What influences your rap music?
I like to express myself and rap music gives me a platform to express what I feel. When combined with the great talent, rap music becomes part of my life.
Every time I see children and young girls suffering, I remember that I still have so much to do in my career to support the community.
The song No Teenage Pregnancy that I released in 2017 makes me proud because it gives lessons to the society.
How do you feel about female rappers?
A few years ago Keko was the only female rapper in Uganda but now we have more, which makes me proud. I hope we get more female rappers defying odds and coming on board.

Do you ever feel like you rap to represent women?
Yes. In fact I am the voice of Ugandan female rappers. My music is spreading home and away. I like to compliment girls and make them feel proud and better about who they are, no matter what society brands them to be.

Have you experienced a situation where you feel you were treated differently as an artiste simply because of your gender?
That is something many female artistes will face, especially at shows. We perform during the most awkward hours and there are promoters who would run away with our money because they know we are not bold enough to follow them or fight.

What do you think of music in northern Uganda?
There is a lot of improvement. With a few hardworking artistes like me, Judas Rap Knowledge, BeePee and among others, our music no longer just stops in Karuma. The artistes are improving on delivery, are trendy and are recording from studios with quality sound.
Matter of fact my new video, Amari, is playing on NTV, Spark TV, Trace, NBS, and MTV base.

What are some of the things you consider as an achievement?
Every musician wants to be famous and exposed. I am currently working with the biggest music label, Tukopoa. Big up to Trip Otrip. I was also awarded Best Female Artiste Northern Uganda Entertainment Awards 2016 and Best Hip Hop Artiste Lango Entertainment Awards 2017.

What does the future hold for you in music?
The future is looking bright. It only requires hardwork coupled with discipline, I can see the best ahead.

Who are the musicians you look up to?
Only a few female musicians have made it in the hip hop world. I look up to Lil Kim, Da Brat, Eve, Trina, Rah Digga and our Ugandan rapper Keko.
