Singer Irene Ntale for Kampala mayor!

It’s not unusual anymore that singers, among other artists, vie for political office.
In fact, entertainers and politicians have a lot in common – or so it seems. Both have to engage the public and often try to push for a cause or to deliver a message.

Kanye West is promising his candidacy on the 2020 presidential ballot; Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is supposedly another choice for The Oval. They know how to engage large crowds at concert venues, so why not give it a shot?
In several countries around the world, we have already witnessed entertainers contesting for political offices and winning them. From Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine who contested and won Kyadondo MP seat to comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy who won last week’s runoff election in Ukraine, ousting incumbent President Petro Poroshenko in a landslide.

However, just days after AfroBeat singer Joseph Mayanja alias Jose Chameleone declared his intention to challenge and oust renowned city lawyer and politician Erias Lukwago for Kampala Lord Mayor seat, the latest we have is that singer, songwriter and guitarist Irene Ntale could be considering to join the race.
“Can a female run for Mayorship?” the Enamba singer tweeted on Tuesday attracting support from her fans who encouraged her to go for it.
When asked by a fan which part of the country she was considering running for mayorship, the RnB, reggae, and acoustic soul singer answered saying Kampala city.

If Irene decides to formally enter the race, she will tussle it out with several other contestants including fellow singer Jose Chameleon, Lukwago (incumbent), vice chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Kampala Godfrey Amooti Nyakaana and one Agnes Namaganda, a former journalist who also reportedly expressed interest the seat.
All we can say is good luck to the songbird.
