Erik Majik
LENS MAN: Erik Majik’s skill is in the name…he makes magic when he gets his hands on a camera. When he started out, all Majik had was the passion to take pictures. Today, he is a celebrated photographer in Mbale District.
Why photography?
One of my early mentors was my best friend and he was a successful photographer. He encouraged me to explore opportunities in the industry. This also came with guidance from fellow photographers.
How did you start out?
When I was in secondary school, I would take my friend’s camera and have street children pose as I snapped away. My love for photography then grew from there. I used to be quiet in school and photography gave me a voice and a way to express myself.
Did you study photography?
No, I just had passion for it and I researched about it. I did whatever it took to learn everything I know.
Tell me something no one knows about you.
I am detail-oriented, a creative thinker, energetic, approachable, reliable, and focused. Sometimes I am a perfectionist, but I have learned to be satisfied as long as I put forth my best effort. I also enjoy working with others and being part of a close-knit team.
How much were you paid for your first gig?
Well (shies away), I worked for free. I was not paid.
How much do you charge for a photoshoot?
I have different photography packages, so it depends on what one wants.
What have been some of your best moments in the industry?
The moments I have worked with public figures, being nominated in the The East Link Media Awards in the field of Best Photographer.
What have been your worst moments?
I was invited to take pictures at the Ikumbania Wa Bugwere Anniversary (Bugwere Kingdom), an event that brought together cultural leaders. I charged batteries and cleared my SD Cards and got to the venue. When it was time for the shoot, I took many shots, then I pressed the review button to view the images, and my heart sank when three words appeared on my screen: “No SD Card”.
What else do you do?
Apart from photography, I do graphics, video shoots and editing (both music videos and all kinds of occassions).
What inspires you?
Dreamers. I am inspired by people who work hard to get to where they want to be, especially those who have conquered challenges.
How many gigs do you get in a week?
They range from two to seven gigs in a good week.
How much do you earn in a month?
(Laughs) I earn depending on how many gigs I get.
Are you employed or you have your own company?
I have a company called Majik Filmz.
What type of camera do you use and how much did it cost you?
I use a Canon 70D, it cost me about Shs4m.
Who are some of your clients?
Most of my clients are usually from my network, which includes friends of Nature Restaurant, Deliverance Church, Danny Loopz and The younger Athletic Foundation.
What does it take to be a photographer?
A bit of research to get a plan in place that would work, then the implementation is gratifying to see my hard work pay off. It has taught me that with a bit of planning, I can achieve my goals.
How much do I need to start a photography business?
A professional photography camera, and anything else can follow.
What do you love most about being a photographer?
It gives me reason to travel to beautiful places and explore, I also get to meet many new people.
