Bobi Wine’s bodyguard faces treason charges

Mr Eddy Ssebuufu alias Eddie Mutwe

The State has said the bodyguard of Kyadondo East MP, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, is to be charged with treason offences before Gulu Magistrate’s Court.

The State was responding to last week’s orders of High Court judge Musa Sekaana  to produce Mr Eddy Ssebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, before it whether “dead” or “alive”.

Mr Mutwe’s lawyers led by Mr Eron Kizza had applied to court to compel the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and the Attorney General to produce their client.

Eddie Mutwe was picked by security detail from Semakokiro Plaza in Kamwokya, Kampala, on August 25 and detained in an unknown place.

The police later came out to say he was being held at Jinja Road Police Station.

During a brief court session yesterday, Peter Tusubiira from the chambers of the Attorney General, told court that Mutwe will be transferred to Gulu court any time and be charged in connection with the Arua Municipality chaotic by-election.

When charged, he will join the 33 others facing the same offence.

The State, however, did not reveal when Mr Mutwe will eventually be transported to Gulu court to be charged formally.

The Constitution demands that any person arrested, should be formally charged before the courts of law within 48 hours or be freed.

Some of the notable suspects charged over the Arua fracas include MPs Mr Kyagulanyi, Mr Kassiano Wadri (Arua Municipality), Mr Paul Mwiru (Jinja East), Mr Gerald Karuhanga (Ntungamo), and Mr Mike Mabikke (former Makindye East MP), among others.

Mr Anthony Kusingura, one of Mutwe’s lawyers, had told court that his client was being unjustly deprived of his fundamental human right to liberty contrary to article 23 (6) (a) of the Constitution.
