How to rock the business casual look

Gloria Haguma

The business look is probably one of the easiest looks to pull off, until they specify it to business casual. Do you ditch the pants? The jacket or the tie?

Contrary to what you may have heard or believe, a business casual look is not supposed to restrict you to ties, jackets and formal pants.

Instead this look is supposed to be able to exude a level of professionalism with your dress code, but also allow you to keep your personal style with it.

It is supposed to be a blend between formal and casual pieces, and not come off like you are trying so hard to impress. Here is how to nail this look.

The most important element in this look is going to be your shirt. So the idea is to keep it as formal and well-fitted as possible. When it comes to the colour choices, pick something neutral, or toned down. Stay away from anything with prints or overly bright hues.

The other important element is your tie. Adding a tie to this look would be great. However, doing away with it all together isn’t a bad look as well. Instead, replace it with a pocket square, and a dashing jacket.

For the bottoms, the traditional dress pants would be an ideal choice. Chino pants are also a great choice, and make for the perfect replacement. Have these in black, or beige. Ensure that the colour you choose works well with your shirt, for a great look.

The last and final piece is the shoes. The traditional lace shoes would be a great option. If you do need something outside the box though, then you may want to consider the monk strap shoes or brogues. Have this in a calm shade such as black or brown.

Remember, the idea is to make just the right impression with your outfit, and still look professional but not to come off like you were on your way to a wedding and ended up at the office.
