Dressing up your maxi skirt

The maxi has been around for long and although most of us hated them back in the day, now you should know that it is a hot fashion item Do not reserve your maxi skirt only for church.

Any female that has been to boarding school in Uganda has a story or two about the maxi skirt. Not only were these compulsory, but we were never allowed to accessorise them with anything more than a boring t-shirt and African sandals. Those days are long gone (at least for me and all those that have graduated), and now you can actually have on your maxi, in any style you want. Here is how you can achieve a chic look with this wardrobe staple.

The options are numerous, so you can find something to suit your personal style. You can begin with the neutral black or white maxi skirt. If you need to wear this to the office, you can pair it with a dress shirt, and a pair of block-heeled boots. If you opt for the white skirt, add a body suit and some chunky jewellery. In order to spice up the look, you can wear your skirt with a front split.

If you are more of the bohemian chic kind of girl, then you can opt for the chiffon or pleated maxi skirt, in a fun shade such as peach, burnt orange or even baby blue. Accessorise this with a crop top, a large weight belt and some gladiator sandals.

Another styling option for this look could be athleisure. This means you can wear your maxi skirt with some sporty pieces, such as sneakers, bomber jacket or even a jersey top. In this case, you can have your skirt in a tulle or lace fabrics.

The printed maxi is also a safe and easy to wear option for this skirt. You could decide to go for a mixed print look by wearing your top in a contrasting print, or match the outfit by wearing it in a print similar to your top. Anything from florals to stripes is a great option.
If you are short, try pairing your maxi with some boots or heels, to give your legs an elongated look.
