Makerere University students have gone to the polls today to elect their new guild president.

But before the voting started, the Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, through his twitter handle called on students to vote in peace.

“In a few minutes, the gallant Makerereans will go to the polls to elect their next Guild President. Gallant Makerereans, it is time to demonstrate that the top brains of Africa reside at Makerere Hill. Vote quietly and intelligently and make Mak greater!” the tweet reads.

The elections which were scheduled for March 2, were postponed to today, due to anticipated electoral violence.

16 candidates are in the run to be Makerere’s next guild president. They include Henry Turyasingura, Joe Kasumba, Andrew Julian Taliwaku, Edward Kinene Ssemakula, Florence Namuganza, Salim Were, Arnold Ssemanda, Patrick Kamyuka and Fredrick Chiluba.

Others are Fred Andama, Prize Ahimbisibwe, Dan Ronnie Isabirye, Johnson Obbo, and Samuel Nuwataho.
