Spinning discs got DJ Massa through school

SPINNING DISCS: Massa Zadoki is a 24-year-old DJ who got himself through school by hustling as a DJ in Mbale District. He shares his story about starting up and juggling music and deejaying.

How would you describe yourself?
I am Massa Zadoki, a 24-year-old DJ and musician from Budadiri. I am a graduate of Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi.

When did you join this industry.
I joined the music business in 2013 when I was just a mobile DJ, then in 2016 I got a permanent job at Sukali Bar in northern division, Mbale Municplity. I am still the DJ there.

How many songs have you produced?
I have five songs; Mbolele, Shina, Good Love and Whine It.

Which DJs have you worked with?
I have worked with Emiz at Thatch Records and Brothers of Zaga.

Who inspired you to join this industry?
The legendary DJ Shiru, DJ Aludah and other DJs who have made it.

Apart from deejaying, what else do you do for a living?
I do different kinds of jobs, including guiding tourists, managing purchases, making budgets for the bar and also singing and writing songs.

What challanges have you faced so far since you joined this DJ business?
People despise and harrass us a lot. They say we are not educated.

Any achievements?
I managed to pay my tuition through working as a DJ and I have also been able to help my family with the little I have.

What are your future plans?
I want to open up my own bar and also take over Mbale entertainment.

What advice do you have for young people who want to join this industry?
To be persistent and patient if they want to achieve something good in future.
