Wizkid impresses, dishes out money

Although his stage name is Wizkid, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun proved last evening that he’s no kid when it comes to musical performances.

Unlike most Nigerian artistes who have, in the past, performed in Uganda, Wizkid knew which buttons to press to impress Ugandans at his #ThursdayNightWithWizkid show held at Lugogo cricket oval. This comes after he had many questioning if he would show up to his show after missing two flights to Uganda.

As though making up for his ‘bad behavior’, he gave the show his best.

He came on stage at 10:45 pm, kicking off his performance with ‘Sweet love’ which tickled the audience to scream and cheer for him. He did other songs including Show you the money, Kind love, Come closer, Holla at your boy and Ojuelegba. His performance was semi-live meaning he did CD playback as well as live music.

The 27-year-old kept the crowd on their toes and also delivered to their expectations. Even though he did not perform some of his popular songs, no one complained afterwards because they had gotten their money’s worth.

Many had vowed not to attend his concert and encouraged others to boycott it after he did not show up for his first advertised show. However on Thursday night, his fans flocked the venue in multitudes. But still the turn up could have even been better if the show had been held over the weekend.

The musician did not only impress musically but also showed a side of him that his fans did not know about. Upon arrival in Uganda, he donated 200 US dollars (approximately Shs720,000 shillings) to a homeless man with on his way from Entebbe International Airport to Kampala.

This was after the man stumbled and fell into a trench after struggling to get a glimpse of him. The Daddy Yo singer stopped his convoy, rolled down the car window, and pulled out the notes he gave the man.

During the show he awarded a woman with 5,000 US dollars (approximately Shs18 million) after she emerged winner of a Star Times promotion.

This was the Nigerian musician’s third visit to Uganda. He first came to Uganda in 2014 during the Guinness All-black party at Golf Course Hotel, and then returned to do a song with Radio and Weasel.
