Aah… even typing out this review fills me with excitement! First, full disclosure. I did not think I would like Suicide Squad. Mainly because DC Extended Universe hasn’t wowed us yet. Just look at Man of Steel, which was just there—not bad, not so exciting. Then there is the movie that disappointed so many this year –Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. If you haven’t yet watched these two, bambi don’t be discouraged. Watch them and judge them for yourself. Back to our jazz. After those two you would understand why another DCEU movie did not sound too exciting. It turns out that I gave up on the franchise too quickly! There is nothing meh about Suicide Squad.
Suicide Squad may be under the superhero genre but what this squad is made of antiheros. These are bad, very bad guys on a mission for the good of others –the opposite of what they are. On the squad is Rick Flag (Kinnaman) who is the leader, Deadshot (Smith), Joker (Leto), Harley Quinn (Robbie), El Diablo (Hernandez), and Killer Croc (Akinnuoye-Agbaje) to mention but a few. You don’t have to be a comic book fan to see take the hint. Their names alone show that they are bad news. So how do they end up on the same squad?
Amanda Waller (Davis), a government agent is the brains behind the squad. She is determined to accomplish missions which are a little off the radar. Her determination drives her into using these villains who are rightfully in prison. The mission is for the squad to do whatever it takes to get rid of the threat –and given their powers, which include flame throwing and cannibalistic tendencies, this means not-so-legal methods.
There is also the fact that for this movie, DC Comics borrows something that features prominently in their competition, Marvel’s movies. And that is humour. Sure it still has that dark element we have come to associate with all things DC Comics but this darkness is lightened up by the character’s albeit dark humour.
This could be credited to the strong cast that was put together for this one. Stories of how the actors were preparing for their roles were many. Some included gaining weight, training with former Navy Seals, living in seclusion and reading books on sociopaths. They prepared for their roles. And you can tell just by watching the movie. In fact, you may leave the cinema a little disturbed.
