Gadget: HP Spectre 13

hp

If you have been searching for the world thinnest laptop, the new HP Spectre is it. This 13-inch gadget comes only with one display option, a 1,920×1,080 nontouch screen. At just 10.4mm thick offering current-gen Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The Core i7 processor has 8GB of RAM and a decent 256GB storage. Whichever model you choose, just be ready to jump fully into the world of USB-C, the new multipurpose data, power and accessory connector. The Spectre has three USB-C ports along the back. All three can carry data or power, and the two centre ones also act as Thunderbolt ports for high-speed data transfer. A bold colour scheme also helps the Spectre stand out, ditching the usual silver and grey for a dark, smokey gray with gold accents. To avoid unnecessary bulk, the hinge has moved in from the very rear edge, and is instead inset by a tiny bit. The touchhpad is very good for a Windows laptop, but small enough that it makes you miss the ease of use that comes with a touchscreen in Windows 10. With all those battery cells crammed in, it is not surprising that the Spectre has decent battery life, running for seven to10 streaming videos.

The good
• Super thin and super light
• Comfortable keyboard
• More ports and power than the MacBook

The bad
• Small trackpad
• Mediocre battery life
• Tiny speakers
• Hinge has limited rotation
