Baking business: Josephine Mutabuza Hakiza operates from home and she says her business started out of love at a young age. She talks to us about her cookery.

How would you define your business?
I am a cook. I love what I do and I am at my happiest when I am in the kitchen.

When did you realise you were a good cook?
At a very tender age. I used to cook everything at home and my father used to call me the chef of the house.

What do you cook best?
I love to cook comfortable food; bread and butter pudding, brown sugar, yoghurt, banana porridge, chicken soup, fairy bread as well as desserts.

Where do you cook from and how can people access you cooking?
I cook from home and cater for parties of up to 100 people. I make desserts and cakes on order. One can call me on 0772933371 or email me on mutabuzaj@gmail.com.

What does it take for someone to be called a great cook?
You must impress the client. They should consistently wow their clients’ pallets at every event they cater for and I believe, I have done that.

If I want to start my own cookery, what do I need and how much would I need?
For any business to succeed you need a passionate owner. Cooking requires passion. The start depends on the capacity you intend to start with and your target customer.

How much do you sell your food?
Prices vary depending on the customer’s needs. If you are interested, you can give me a call and we talk.

How much did you invest in this business?
I started small, with capital of less than Shs2m. But one has to first know what they want to engage themselves in. Some people start with Shs1m, others Shs5m while someone might start with Shs100m.

What ingredients do you use?
A variety, but I use the best for whatever I am cooking. I don’t compromise on quality.
