The dvd : Whitney

mub

This will make you kinda sad whether you were a fan or not. This is a 2015 biographical movie based on the late American recording artiste Whitney Houston. It is a tribute.
Summarising someone’s life story into a one-and-half hours long movie can be so hard but Angela Bassett the director did a good job with this one. What we end up with are highlights of the music star’s life – good and bad. Her rise to fame and her on and off relation with Bobby Brown. When watching a movie like this, one of the points of focus is the actor chosen to play such a star’s role. For example, in my opinion Idris Elba did not do a good job acting as Nelson Mandela in Long Road to Freedom yet Forest Whitaker acted as Idi Amin pretty well in The Last King of Scotland. I could not wait to see how Yaya DaCosta would act and when I did, I thought that she did a good job. If it was the premier and she was present, I would most probably applaud her. Arlen Escarpeta fit in Bobby Brown’s shoes pretty well too.
There is probably nothing new that you will discover about Houston when you watch this movie but it is a good watch nonetheless. You will sing along here and there and for a moment forget that she is gone, then cry here and some during the scenes of the birth of her little girl (Bobbi Kristina Brown) especially, now that both are gone. It is a bitter sweet one done so simply. You will enjoy it.
