The lensman: He abandoned his job at a media house and with his Shs5m savings, started Satellite Studios. Eight years later Ahmed Kayiwa’s business is worth Shs60m.

What’s the name of your business?
Satellite studios.

Why did you name it so?
We can cover any event anywhere in Uganda, just like what a satellite does in collecting information all over the globe.

What is the nature of your business?
We do photography and that involves family portraits, weddings and other ceremonies such as private parties. We also do billboard photos, videography and rent out plasma screens as well.

When did you start up Satellite Studios?
In 2007.

Where did you get the money to start?
Before I opened up the studios, I was working with New Vision as a photojournalist and I used the little savings to start my business.

How much did you invest in this business and how much is it worth now?
About Shs5m, but it is now worth Shs60m.

Where is Satellite studios located?
On Martin Road, Plot No. 49/51 near Crane Access ATM outlet.

What ceremonies have you worked at so far and who are some of your biggest clients?
I was the official photographer for Wycliffe, Akon, Kirk Franklin and King Oyo’s 18th birthday. I am also the official photographer for Multichoice Uganda, Uniliver, Club Guvnor and Scanad, among other corporate companies.
I have also done videography and taken photographs for artistes such as Jose Chameleone, Mesach Ssemakula and Haruna Mubiru.

What are some of the challenges in this kind of business?
Most of the time, clients demand super quality work yet the machines to do that work are so expensive.
Competition is also high. You always have to be on the lookout for events and ceremonies.

How much do you charge?
It depends on what the client wants. If it is photos, we look at how many photos the client wants and in what size. If it is videography, we look at how long the ceremony is going to take.

How have you benefited from this business?
For starters, this business has helped me get connections. I have rubbed shoulders with people I would not have gotten a chance to associate with.
I am also able to look after my wife and daughter through this business.
I have built a house and have houses for rent because of profits from this business, and I also bought five plots in Jomayi.
