DBANJ: BEHIND THE SCENES: An apology to Chameleone and establishing a movement

Chameleone

During the press conference at Serena hotel, D’banj was tasked to name some of the Ugandan singers he knew. The Oliver Twist singer started with Chameleonair (read Chameleone), Bebe Cool, whom he referred to as a father that opened the door for them, Navio, Juliana, and those ‘two boys’- Radio & Weasle. “I met them in 2011, I knew them before they were big in Uganda, they are very talented,” D’banj said. He concluded his list with Eddy Kenzo, whom he said he did not know was Ugandan until a few months ago. On NTV’s the The Beat, Douglas Lwanga tasked D’banj to explain why he did not recognise Chameleone during his MAMA Evolution Artiste Award acceptance speech. D’banj thanked Douglas for “the excellent reminder” before apologising to Chameleone. “My brother, I am very sorry, I didn’t intend that, it is because I did not know I was winning, so I had not prepared the speech. But we are brothers and you know I respect you and I already apologised during our other encounters,” D’banj said
Meanwhile, for every interview, D’banj urged artistes to believe in themselves and reach out to other artistes without fear: “That’s how I met Kanye West in Dubai, and the next day I was signed to his record label. Nothing is impossible, actually I want to meet as much new talent from Uganda as there is,” D’banj said. He said he would like to record collabos with Navio, Radio & Weasle, Chameleone, Bebe Cool and Juliana. The Koko Master highlighted that he wants to create a movement as opposed to expanding a record label. “I want African musicians to be one. I want some sort of movement where the world will respect us for us,” D’banj said.
