The last three James Bond movies were a bit of a drag for me. James Bond is supposed to be the embodiment of ‘star taffa’, and by this I mean, he drives into a difficult situation inside his cool car of the moment; the Aston Martin DB5 comes to mind, uses his license to do some major damage to the bad guy, save or meet the Bond girl and have some variation of a martini after it is all said and done –shaken, not stirred of course. Oh, and he does this looking dapper, with every hair in place.
However, since Daniel Craig came into the picture as agent 007 of the MI6, dude does not seem to get a break! Sure he has been getting the bad guys but he went through some deep stuff. In Casino Royale, he lost Vesper. So, of course, the next movie, Quantum of Solace had to be personal as he went after the guys who had a hand in her death. Then Skyfall happened –to give a hint of how just emotionally draining this one was, Adele did the theme song. For anyone who goes to the movies on escapist plot, this is a drag! However, with Spectre, we get back to the James Bond we know, which is a relief! Of course, critics are not going to love this one, saying it goes back to him playing with toys and what not. But for anyone who does not want to think too much, Spectre should leave you satisfied. For Sam Smith fans, the theme song should be a bonus.
In this installment, Bond goes after Sciarra, part of a global network whose aim is world domination (isn’t it always) through digital surveillance (Hi Snowden). It turns out Oberhauser, the mastermind of this network (Spectre) and Bond go way back, and the former has had a hand in all the misfortune that has come Bond’s way in the previous movies. Meanwhile, MI6 is on the verge of being disbanded, which would put an end to secret agents like Bond. In short, M (Fiennes) needs Bond on his best behaviour. But when has Bond followed orders? It gets hard since the former M (Judi Dench) left him a message in the event of her death, that he go after Sciarra. There is enough drama to go around. And that is before we even talk about the Bond girls, one of who is the oldest that has ever been cast in that role, and the other has a close relationship with the enemy.
