The Ugandan comedy industry has come a long way. It has grown and been embraced by Ugandans to the point where comedians can now hold one-man shows.
After Salvado’s Man From Ombokolo show held in June, stand-up comedian Afande Kerekere also held his one-man show. The show dubbed One Afande One Mission attracted a full house at Theatre La Bonita.
The comedian, real name George Mulindwa, sent the crowd into three hours of laughter and left people doubting whether he is really a Muganda by tribe because of his Luo-like accent. Dressed in a white Police traffic uniform, Kerekere took to the stage at around 8.30pm, and cracked ribs for about an hour.
His jokes were mostly tribal, and majorly stereotyping Basoga. He told the joke of a Musoga rolex maker, who, on his way to work, found two security guards fighting, so he decided to sit down and watch. When one of the guards shot his colleague in the course of the fight, he also shot himself. “The Musoga man thought he shouldn’t miss the continuation of the fight, so he also shot himself so he could watch the fight in the afterlife.
The best moment that made the whole house laugh their lungs out was when the comedian invited a young girl on stage and asked her a few questions. When she was asked where she stays, she answered: Mulago. After several questions, the comedian asked the little girl about which man goes to their home when daddy is away. The girl confidently pointed at the man who was seated next to her mother, sending the crowd into laughter.
The comedian then left the stage for singer Khalifah Aganaga, who performed songs like Good Goody Girl.
Kerekere then came back to the stage at around 10pm, this time wearing the khaki police uniform. The show ended a few minutes past 11pm.
