Amy Schumer is on a roll! So much that she wrote the script for Judd Apatow’s latest movie, which is a first. Apatow has written the scripts for all his previous movies. For the Apatow fans, this does not diminish his kind of humour in Trainwreck.
Schumer also stars in the movie as Amy Townsend whose social life is lined with a string of one-night stands, and walks of shame. Her lifestyle is a result of a mantra her father drummed into her and sister Kim’s heads 23 years ago; that monogamy is not realistic. As an adult, Amy seems to have taken the words to heart as she avoids anything that barely resembles a relationship.
When she is not hooking up with someone, Amy works for a men’s magazine and generally has a good life –one that makes her happy. Until her boss assigns her to work on a story about a sports doctor Aaron Connors (Hader). She meets the good doctor, they go on a string of outings and she wakes up in his bed the next morning, breaking her ‘never spend the night’ rule. To make matters worse, Connors wants to see her again. In short, things get complicated.
Before you dismiss this as a predictable romcom, note that this is no ordinary romcom. First, it is more comedy than romance. So guys, you’ll also enjoy it. Second, Lebron James has the bff role in the movie, complete with asking for details from Aaron about dates, while he is starring as himself –talk about comedy! There are several stars in the movie littered all over the place, playing unlikely characters, which makes for comic moments.
However, if you have watched Schumer comedy sketches and loved her style of humour, you might not like how tame she is in the movie. You can almost feel her holding back on her outrageousness. On the other hand, those who don’t enjoy her comedy should be able to put up with her Trainwreck. Another thing, this is not a movie you want to watch with the little ones around; it lives up to its R-rating.
