Makerere’s Karen Nyangan is Miss Tourism Karamoja

Those who still say that they will not wait for Karamoja to develop should forget that slogan, because Karamoja region is now on the road to development,
Several activities are now taking place in the region including the recent Miss Tourism Karamoja, which was held at Mt Moroto Hotel supported by businessman Kolonasi Kodet and the Ministry of Tourism.
For whoever attended the selection of Miss Tourism Karamoja on Saturday, it was no surprise that Karen Nyangan emerged winner. The 20-year-old from Napak District was the youngest contestant, but her confidence and eloquence was unmatched by the six other contestants.
Karen,  who is a  student of Makerere  University pursuing a Bachelors in Procurement degree, will carry the Karamoja flag together with her two runners –up at the national Miss Uganda Tourism pageant later in the year.
The first runner-up was Hans Acheng from Kaabong District and the second runner-up was Grace Nyangan from Moroto, who is studying medicine at Makerere University. The three received wrapped gifts, and the other girls did not leave empty-handed as they were also handed gifts.
Helen Pulkol, the deputy resident district commissioner Moroto, who was the chief guest at the event described the event as the first of its kind to happen in Karamoja due to the  peace currently prevailing in the region.
“Karamoja is now open for all the events, it’s no longer Karamoja of those days of guns. Government has disarmed those who had guns. We are now free like other people in the country,” she said.
Meanwhile, a fight nearly broke out after a local musicians pulled someone’s wife to dance with him, which angered the husband who wanted to hit the musician with bottle of beer. The situation was calmed down by security personnel deployed to the guard the event.
