Ted, the cute and cuddly bear makes a comeback in this sequel to the 2012 hit comedy. If you watched the first one, I’m pretty sure you just rolled your eyes at the cute and cuddly bit because there is nothing cute and cuddly about Ted’s behaviour.
In Ted 2, Ted (voiced by McFarlane) has married his girlfriend from the prequel, Tammy-Lynn (Barth). Naturally, for the happy couple, next on the agenda is starting a family. Of course this is not going to come easy, given that Ted is basically a stuffed animal –and that is where the central plot of the movie lies.
The couple turns to John (Wahlberg), Ted’s BFF for help. John happily agrees to be the couple’s sperm donor, even making it to the sperm bank. However, Ted’s mischievousness creates a slippery situation, which not even their sense of humour can get them out of. Just like that artificial insemination is off the table.
The couple’s next option is to apply for adoption. That plan also hits a wall when the couple is told that their marriage is not legal, and they have to prove that it is. Oh, they also have to prove that Ted is human. Asking for John’s help again, Ted hires Samantha Leslie Jackson (Seyfried) to take on the government. Ted and John’s experience of the law is limited to the kind of legal jargon after all. What follows is a series of laughs, depending on your level of sensibilities, and many unfortunate encounters.
The movie has almost the same dose of offensive comedy the first one had. If you liked the first movie therefore, you will most definitely love this one. If, however, you found yourself cringing at the first one’s humour, then you’ll probably be doing the same. Sequels are usually tricky business for comedies and McFarlane is aware of it, as he said in an interview after announcing that he was working on Ted 2. The material in the movie is inarguably new. However, most of it touches civil rights topics that are delicate subjects in the US . But as a movie for entertainment’s sake, it is a hoot.
