Imagine a world where rockets are commonplace,  they are like the bodas on our streets. Also imagine floating parks reminiscent of the floating gardens. That is the stuff TomorrowLand is made of — taking us to that world we used to imagine every time we watched The Jetsons.
When you see George Clooney’s name on the cast, it is easy to conclude that it is all about him — the guy has got screen presence after all. However, this is not the case. Instead, every one in the movie carries their weight.
For starters, we have the teenage Casey Newton (Robinson) and her engineer father Eddie (McGraw). Then we have a little girl robot, Athena, who looks like the adorable version of an android. Athena leads Casey to discover a pin which gives her a glimpse into a place which looks like a futuristic theme park.
Casey later learns about Athena’s past and about Frank (Clooney) plus his work keeping tabs on TomorrowLand, which is the place Casey was able to see because of the pin. They also discover that Earth is in trouble, thanks to Nix (Laurie), who attracts the attention of evil robots, and set out to save the planet.
The movie is entertaining to say the least, having been described as another gem in Disney’s library of adventures. And they are right in that, despite some violent scenes, and parts of the plot that are a little confusing. The movie maintains that optimism that are characteristic of Disney movies. This is a welcome relief from the majority of movies today that paint a very bleak future for Earth.
It is also refreshing that it does not take a mugged guy with a god complex to save the earth, but rather a little girl robot, an optimistic teenager and a bitter old guy. The vibes between the three are just so heartwarming, albeit with a few iffy parts when Frank is pining after Athena —there is an explanation for that, don’t worry.
