If you have watched the trailer or read the book that inspired it, you must be wondering how it gets to show in cinemas, yet the other movie we shall not name lest we set someone off, didn’t. Maybe it is because it has not been as hyped. Well, whatever the reason, the conversation about our selective ethics is for another day, and another forum.
Addicted has been a victim of bootlegging but as one friend put it, “all that man candy is meant to be seen in cinema quality”. And that is what has made the movie get buzz on social media, outside Uganda at least, – the cast or to be more specific, Kodjoe, Levy and Beckford. Never mind that the plot revolves around a woman and her relations with these men.
It follows Zoe Reynard (Leal) a successful business woman, devoted wife and mother. A pretty well-put together woman from the look of things. However, Zoe has a battle raging inside her. She has an addiction that she has managed to keep at bay till she meets Quentin (Levy), an artist offering more than a business opportunity. Soon, Zoe’s world is turned topsy-turvy as her escapades get out of hand and she seeks the help of Dr Marcella Spencer (Williams), who specialises in sex addiction. It goes without saying that this is not a movie you should watch with any child around.
This is one of those movies many people are going to watch, whether you say it’s bad or not. And again this is because of the cast. However, for those that care about quality, Addicted does not live up to its potential. It could have really explored sex addiction and what it does to a person, which it kinda did, but it wallows too much in melodrama that you are left cheated when it ends. In the end, it seems like an excuse to have all these attractive actors in one movie. But hey, that seems to be working for it, since it has done well in the cinemas it has been shown.
