UK BASED: She is a student at Birmingham University in the UK, but Ang3lina broke onto the local music scene last year. Her Ghetto Loving track got heads nodding and many thought she wasn’t Ugandan. She meets her fan Frank Mubiru.
Briefly describe who Ang3lina is?
My name is Angella Nabuufu Kintu. I’m a 20-year-old UK-based Ugandan artiste. I come from a family of four girls. My mother Ms Juliet Nakibuule who stays in the UK while my dad Mr Richard Kintu lives in Uganda. Currently, I’m studying at the University of Birmingham and I’m about to complete my Psychology degree.
How does it feel having been nominated in the Hipipo music awards as an artiste from the diaspora?
It feels fulfilling that my fans appreciate me. That is a driving force in my career, having got a nomination in just my first year of professional music. I truly appreciate.
How best would you categorise your music?
It’s a blend of local and urban music.
What has kept you off the local scene for such a long time?
School has kept me busy but I intend to come back to Uganda for good after my graduation, which is fast approaching.
What reason do you have for joining the music industry?
I have always had a passion for music and I would like to share my talent with people.
Besides music, what else do you do in the UK?
I have a job. I’m a sales person for a clothing line called Sonic. It’s a factory that manufactures clothing.
What is the difference between Ugandan and UK music?
The Ugandan community in the UK is much smaller and getting exposed musically is much easier there than it is in Uganda.
Who do you think are your threats in the music industry this year?
Grey Naava, Sheeba and Irene Ntale.
What can’t you live without?
That would be God, my family and music.
What are your hobbies?
Producing beats. I’m also an upcoming music producer.
Best food?
Posho and beans.
What difference do you hope to bring to the entertainment industry in Uganda?
I want to bring an urban kind of vibe to the Ugandan market. Something that our youth and the rest of world can relate to.
When you are in the UK, how do you distribute your music down here in Uganda?
I’m signed to Supanova Music Group. They help in managing, distributing and booking my performances and interviews.
