Hustler : Vincent Asiimwe

hus

Vincent Asiimwe has been doing design work for four years and he does work for big artistes such as Davido.

What inspired the name of your business?
I named it Smoky Graphics because I found it unique and wanted to identify my work to my name.

What is graphics designing all about?
It is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas. The designer works with a variety of communication tools to convey a message from a client to a particular audience. The main tools are image and typography.

How long have you been doing this?
For four years now.

What were you doing before this?
Nothing.

So where did you get the love for graphics designing?
I used to do art and I wanted to advance it to computer skills and that also forced me to do a graphic designing course at Macmaine School of computing in 2010.

What kind of Graphics designing do you do?
I basically do visual designs and communication design and these include logos and branding, publications (magazines, animations, advertisements, posters, billboards, website graphics and elements, signs and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organised text and pure design elements such as images, shapes and colour, which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.

What big projects have you worked on?
My kid is a superstar; I’m the official Davido artwork designer, Kenzo and other individual pieces, among others.

How much do you charge for your work?
It depends on the composition. Simple logos cost Shs200,000, a poster Shs100,000, animations cost Shs800,000, depending on the seconds, billboards Shs1.5m, and website graphics cost Shs1.8m.

What are the challenges that you are facing currently?
People are not aware about graphics and they go for cheap designs, especially on Nasser Road where they do bubble gum graphics or copy and paste.
With this kind of work, we have to move with our gargets (laptops) which are always stolen. For example, I have bought three laptops this year alone.

What drives you?
I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares, as opposed to ugly things. That’s my intent.
