What’s the name of your business?
AliSumsha Jewellery. It’s a combination of my sister’s and my names. Ali for Aliya, Sum for Sumaya and Sha for Shamira my sister.

Did you study this kind of work?
No I didn’t. Actually I’m a professional teacher holding a Bachelor’s degree in Education but I majored in English and Literature.

Why would a professional teacher go into this kind of business?
Everyone has their likes and dislikes. I do this business because of passion and it enables me to do my other stuff. I concentrate on it only in my free time and it’s easy for me to do.

What kind of jewellery do you make?
I make all kinds of modern jewellery, handmade from beads, chains and other products. I also blend them with African clothes especially Kitenge and bags.

How many pieces can you make in a day?
Depending on how complicated it is, I can make 20 pieces but all that depends on how complex or easy a piece is.

When did you start this business?
I started it in July 2011, I was still in high school.
How much do your products go for?
The prices depend on the kind of beads I use and time I spend working on a piece. But they cost between Shs3,000 and Shs100,000 while clothes cost from Shs50,000 to Shs200,000.

What challenges do you experience?
My biggest challenge is lack of resources to make this business known and bigger.

What avenues do you use to sell these products?
I use online platforms, that is Facebook and e-bay where people worldwide get to see my products and place their orders. My money comes in with no taxes or rent dues, since I work from home.

Then how can one get to you in case they want your products?
The easiest way to get to me is through my number 0791985082 or contact me through my Facebook page Aliya Nakamate.

Is this a worthy business for you?
Yes, it is because I’m surviving off it. For example, I can get orders of Shs300,000 from Norway, Shs200,000 from the UK and so on, via the Internet.

What advantages does this business have over others?
It’s easy and flexible. I have met many people, and it is a learning process. I keep learning new things all the time. Also, the money is not bad. I have earned more than I invested and you don’t need a shop for this kind of business.
