Zig Zag takes you back in time

place2Zig Zag could sound a funny name for a hangout but again just the description of the movement you might experience when you take one too many beers, wine or spirits is just that. You will find it hard to take sober, straight steps and thus move in a zig zag manner.
That is essentially one of the top priorities of Zig Zag, a new entrant to Kampala’s nightlife list, located in Namuwongo, just 500 metres from the taxi stage.
It is an inviting hangout which you can visit to enjoy a beer at the counter, in a small lounge or under the parasols in the gardens with well-tended grass.
If you are a buff for good old music, then this could become your second home because they play strictly old skool music every day of the year and not just in audio but in full HD videos.
Anne Mpaulo Mandre is the proprietor of Zig Zag.  She says as you enjoy the music, you will dig into some tasty pork.
“Our gardens have a cool breeze where you can relax with your family on the weekend. We also have an original super league pool table from the UK. Our venue is open for meetings, parties, we have mobile disco for hire and outside catering,” Mpaulo lists things you can do at Zig Zag.
She adds that service staff know how to care for you well enough for you to feel like a king and queen. Zig Zag has been open for three months and will officially launch on Friday, August 1, with the ‘Old Skool Overload’ with Uganda’s Old Skool deejays Dru Nyce, Gee Em, Peter, Andy Mak, Paul, and Bantam on the turntables.
The prices at the bar are inviting. Sodas go for 2k, beers at 4k, spirits’ shots go for between 5K and 8K, wine goes for 8K per glass, pork skewers and chicken gor for 5K. Fish fingers, burgers and steaks cost between 12k and 15K. Fried goat goes for 15K, but you won’t need another meal for the rest of the day.
The bar and restaurant is open all week and closes with the last customer. However the challenges are part of the journey. Mpaulo says the costs of food and drinks are high which, has forced them price some items a bit higher than they would like to. When I ask her what she is doing to avert this, she says, “Tusaba Gavumenti etuyambe!” But running a bar does not stop her from hanging out elsewhere. She is a regular at Green Gardens in Bweyogerere to relax and at La Foret in Muyenga to swim with her family. Zig zag can accommodate up to 200 people.

Strictly Old Skool music

“We play strictly the old skool from the 70’s to 1997 and only HD videos. We have Uganda’s finest Old Skool DJ’s on our roster and soon we will be bringing regional deejays to spice it up,” Anne Mpaulo the proprietor  explains.
