The Track: Bill Gates – Dr Hilderman

Does anybody remember Mazongoto and the song that quickly followed, Campus Girl, with its video showing those very briefly dressed girls, all wiggling and dirty-winding and bum-shaking at Dr Hilderman’s command…anyone remember? We all do. Now, does anyone know where on earth that Dr Hilderman went off to? Because honestly, I can’t seem to relate him with this new impersonator by the same name, the one that has done songs like Abiita Ebikutte, then Talindeka and now Bill Gates.

What happened to the old Dr Hilderman? Fine, I know he had not always come off with a bad-boy air; he really was not the kind to pose for media photos with ganja smoke clouding his dreadlocked face. He was not a bad boy, even in his Campus Girl ways. But there should surely be an explanation for these all of a sudden references to God and prayer and providence. Did Dr Hilderman become born again? What else could explain all this spirituality in his songs?

This song, Bill Gates, is a prayerful song. The man is down on his knees, begging God to provide for him and save him from pride and arrogance. He says he wants money, fine, but nothing like what Bill Gates has. Just enough to get by. This song has true soul. It is another side to the Dr Hilderman we knew back then…and it is not a bad side at all.
