Sweat and relax at Munyonyo’s wellness centre

Relax: Speke Resort Munyonyo is looked at as conference centre, but there are lots of fun activities too, writes Edgar R. Batte  writes.

After a long week, with eyes on the computer screen or making the rounds on job, taking a day off for a treat is worthwhile. One place that will put your thoughts together, calm the soul and rejuvenate the mind is the wellness centre at the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort.
You can start in the swimming pool. The waters are crystal clear blue, proof that it is clean and inviting. You can actually see the pool’s floor. For a sunny Saturday midmorning, afternoon or evening, the waters are cool. The centre extends to a well-equipped gym where you can work out and sweat, having fun and expanding your network with new people as you sweat out to a healthier life.
Asst. general manager, Speke Resort, Munyonyo, Akhilesh Malik, explains that people of different sizes, and abilities can benefit from being physically active.
“The more physical activity you do, the greater the health benefits. Once you begin to exercise regularly, you will discover many more reasons exercise is so important to improving the quality of your life. Exercise reduces stress, lifts moods, and helps you sleep better. It can keep you looking and feeling younger throughout your entire life,” he adds.

At the wellness centre is a spa, steam bath, sauna and squash court for patrons to relax. For this, one parts with a daily membership of 30k for all facilities, excluding the spa that has a massage parlour.
The extension of the wellness centre is the equestrian centre which has horse-riding as a major. Here, Malik says it will not matter if you are an avid or experienced horse rider, anyone can appreciate nature’s gentle, fast animal.
“Galloping down a racetrack or a trot in a tranquil setting, the equestrian centre which comprises of a 28-horse stable will make any horse-riding fan pleased. It is fun for the whole family; children can enjoy a pony ride or riding lessons with the help of our highly- trained team of instructors, while seasoned horse riders can take to the tracks,” the resort’s manager adds.
The rates are: A pony ride costs 20k for 20 minutes around the resort while lessons for a person will cost you 45k for 30 minutes. If you are sharing the ride with someone, this will cost 45k for 45 minutes. A hack (a guided tour around the Munyonyo village) costs 50k for an hour. When all is done and enjoyed, you can relax at The Marina, a scenic harbour with a wide array of activities in or on the water.
Malik observes that whether you are an extreme adventure daredevil who loves an adrenaline rush or a free spirit that just wants to relax near the water, one thing is certain, you are sure to be entertained by special recreational activities like jet skis, motorised boats, a 70-seater sunset cruise liner, aquatic sports, shore fishing or deep lake fishing as well as sundowner cruises. Canoe rides go for 40k for half hour and 80k for an hour.
The resort is conveniently located only 12km from the centre of Kampala, also offering lunch and dining experiences at different bars, lounges and restaurant.
