Buddu FM’s Sophie opens up to fan

Masaka’s smooth voice: Sophia Bukirwa, popularly known as Sophie Baby’s voice, has been on radio for nine years. She has since established a strong fanbase in Masaka and one lucky fan, Robert Nsubuga, had a chance to meet her.

What name do you use on radio?
Sophie Babyface

You look gorgeous, how old are you?
I am 29 years old.
What is your level of education and which schools did you go to?
I hold a diploma in journalism, which I got from International Institute of Business and Media studies. I went to Kawempe Mbogo Primary School, then Hawah Secondary School-Naluvuule, Kawempe Moslem Secondary School and Kibibi Secondary School for my A-Level.

Which programmes do you present?
I do Muchakaaze (evening drive show) from Monday to Friday and Wewumulire (a love show) in the night from Monday to Thursday.

How long have you been in the media?
This is my ninth year.

When and how did you start to work on radio?
In 2006. I started working with Radio Bilali at Uganda Supreme Council for four years as I was studying. I had an uncle who was then a deputy Mufti, who helped me get the position easily, then I joined Pearl FM where I worked for two years and now I am at Radio Buddu.

What inspired you to enter media work?
I had a passion for radio, but I wanted to be an anchor. I was inspired by Monilla Ali, who was a host on UTV, now UBC.

What challenges have you faced as a radio presenter?
At first I had issues with new radio stations where you could work a lot yet earn little pay.

Have you benefited from radio in any way?
I have, but not so much. I have managed to start up a small boutique, made friends and I rear goats as well.

What makes you different from other presenters?
I think I am versatile because I do two different programmes; on the drive show, I go crazy and when it comes to the night love show, I sound like a princess.

What is your dream media house?
I wish to work for NTV. I have applied there thrice but I do not know when my time will come, because I believe I have a face for TV.

Who is your role model in the media?
Prossy Patra of Dembe FM.

What do you enjoy doing?
Going out with friends and cooking for myself.

What is your relationship status?
I am single, but dating someone.

Is it true that you are dating one of the top managers at Buddu?
It is not true. The person I am seeing is even out of Masaka.

What is your best dish?
Pilau and chapatti.
