Amagara Café Bistro

Amagara Café is homely. PHOTO BY EDGAR R. BATTEAmagara is a Runyankole word to mean life. Amagara Café Bistro’s catch phrase is ‘let’s share life’ and they do so through some culinary delights. The modest bistro offers you a chance to enjoy your coffee, tea, quick snack or a full meal at the exterior terrace. It has an interior section too.

It’s menu offers fair variety. There is a continental buffet and al carte, sandwiches, a wide range of cocktails and juices. You might want to pass by after a day’s work to unwind with some wine, spirits, beer or a soft drink.
Winnie Kakai is the café’s manager. She says Amagara’s prices are favourable and pocket-friendly.

“In the face of competition, we are the finest dining place and we have a favourable ambience and pocket-friendly prices that beat our competition on Colville Street,” Kakai says.

Their sandwiches go for between Shs18,000 and Shs20,000 while buffet goes for between Shs20,000 and Shs30,000. Grills are also on the menu and go for between Shs20,000 and Shs35,000, while bottle of wine goes for between Shs30,000 and Shs70,000 and cocktails for between Shs5,000 and Shs8,000.

One of the reasons you might want to visit Amagara is the availability of free Wi-Fi. The other is its ample and secure parking space. The parking space is limited though, as it can only accommodate a few cars. Otherwise you will park along the street.
There are some special treats like the ‘Sundowner’ happy hour beers on promotion, plus coffee loyalty cards on which you can accumulate points and have a free treat at some point. Children below 10 years get to eat free on Sundays.
Kakai says some of Amagara’s disfavours lie in its location, sometimes experiencing traffic that inconveniences customers.

She says, “Being near Theatre La Bonita which normally hosts shows, it sometimes blocks the whole road, which makes us lose customers.”
Amagara sits 70 customers. It is open seven days a week from 7am to 11pm on working days and 8am to 10pm on weekends. Amagara serves breakfast and brunch, lunch and dinner.


Amagara is located on Plot 14, Colville Street, opposite Statistics House and above Christ the King Catholic Church. This allows you a chance to watch traffic off the street as you enjoy your outing or simply have an open air atmosphere.
