The Track: Bakoowu – Mathias Walukagga

You just cannot ignore Kadongo Kamu music. There are major issues going on in Kadongo Kamu songs. Kadongo Kamu time is not time for joking, or laughing around or making silly jokes; you stand at attention because grave issues of national importance are under discussion here. It is like that time in the church service when the preacher walks to the podium to make their sermon.

And our preacher is Pastor Walukagga. And boy, is he on some form! The subject of his sermon is general societal fatigue, by everybody, regarding every single thing. Prostitutes are tired, wives are tired, husbands are tired, MPs are tired, voters are tired, doctors are tired, teachers are tired, security guards are tired, neighbours are tired, lenders are tired, debtors are tired, employees are tired, those who are suicidal are tired, drivers and businesspersons are tired, everybody is tired… even God is tired.

Bakoowu is one of those songs that summarises the feel of Ugandan society to date. Walukagga sings as if he got the song through a vision from God; he sounds like one of those prophets in the Old Testament who has come to warn people of impending doom. His song goes beyond the realms of simple plastic entertainment, into the domain of a polemic, a societal wakeup call, which should be heeded. You cannot ignore this song. And you just cannot ignore Kadongo Kamu either.
