If you are an action junkie, then you will like Gangster Squad whose title should give you some ideas on what to expect. It is loosely based on a movie of real lives of an LA Police Department’s officers and detectives who formed a group to fight the Gangster Squad unit in the 1940s.
Their aim is to protect LA from a gangster called Mickey Cohen, played by Sean Penn, and his gang. What is more disturbing is that Cohen is planning an expansion of his criminal franchise. He is way too strong for the police because he has eliminated witnesses and bribed both the court and the police, controlling both illegal and legal sides of L.A.
The Police hatches a plan to lure The Gangster Squad into a trap in Los Angeles’ Chinatown by Cohen’s head hit-man Wrevock who is also responsible for a recent killing. Wooters interrupts the ambush just in time to save another live.
The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 33 per cent based on reviews from 166 critics, with the site’s consensus stating: “Though it’s stylish and features a talented cast, Gangster Squad suffers from lacklustre writing, underdeveloped characters and an excessive amount of violence”.
