Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson have promoted this movie so much that it feels like you have watched it before the actual deed. Short videos, memes, hilarious photos on Instagram, Central Intelligence has truly been in our faces.
Hart plays Calvin, a forensic accountant whose life is not going as well as he thought it would. Johnson plays Bobbie, a CIA agent who may or may not have some bad motives up his sleeves. The two met in high school during Calvin’s crowning moment and Bobbie’s lowest one, one that involved a birthday suit. The two don’t meet again for 20 years.
When they do meet, Bobbie is being pursued by the CIA and has somehow managed to rope in Calvin. Calvin is torn between helping the CIA and sticking out for Bobbie again. Despite being torn, there is also the excitement this brings to a life that has become such a drag that it is starting to affect his marriage. Then there is the fact that there is a former CIA agent who wants Bobbie, and now Calvin, dead. So despite all the funny spots the two find themselves in, there is real danger lurking in the background.
In short, this is a funny movie about serious issues. Its strongest point is the strange-enough-to-peak-our-interest combination that is Hart and Johnson. And boy does the movie milk this! I already mentioned the promos, didn’t I? Well, the movie rides a lot on the two delivering enough laughs for us not to notice that there are bits in the plot that are a little meh. Fortunately, these scenes are many enough to achieve that effect. This might not work well for the plot-sensitive however. Word to the cinema-goers, laugh a lot, don’t pay too much attention to the actual plot.
