This year has produced some pretty awesome animated movies that appeal to both adults and children. The latest movie, Big Hero 6, will appeal to robotics and science lovers as well.
The movie takes place in the fictional San Fransokyo (must be a combo of San Francisco and Tokyo). It follows Hiro, a 14-year-old braniac who has already graduated from high school. His older brother Tadashi, who is a tech whiz himself, encourages him to join San Fransokyo’s Institute of Technology. Hiro gets in after wowing Prof Callaghan, the institute’s head, with his microbots project.
At the institute, Hiro meets Baymax, a robot Tadashi created as a personal care companion. He also meets Tadashi’s other friends, Fred, Honey Lemon, Wasabi and GoGo. But just as Hiro is settling in, he loses his brother in a fire at the institute. Hiro goes into seclusion till a chance encounter with Baymax makes him realise that a masked man is using his microbots technology. Royally pissed at this, Hiro upgrades Baymax into a combat robot and together with Tadashi’s other friends, forms Big Hero 6.
So far, the movie has been well received, with the bulk of the praise going to its characters, especially Baymax. This is with good reason. Baymax is the softie of the movie, kind of like Olaf was in Frozen, only that he can kick some major butt when he needs to. The other characters also come with their own strengths, which when put together make for a team you just have to root for.
