Genious: Eastern’s main disc spinner

DJ Main Man Genious

DISC SPINNER: DJ Main Man Genious was passionate about deejaying that he decided to follow his dream in Senior One. He is now 22 years old and one of the biggest names in Mbale. DENIS MUKUNGU caught up with the Club eastern DJ of the year winner.
Who is Main Man Genious?
My real name is Julius Magomu. I am 22 years old and I am a resident DJ at Club El Tanjia-Mbale and also a young hustler trying to find his way in life.

How did you join the deejaying business?
In 2008 when I had just joined Senior One, I became exposed to DJ software. I later met a friend who used to play at functions and I started carrying his music CDs. As time went by, he let me deejay at 5am when people had left the club.

What inspired you to become a DJ?
I can’t say I was inspired. For me it was just a hobby, I enjoyed doing it and I utilised my time whenever I got an opportunity.

How were you juggling books and being a DJ?
Luckily, I enrolled at a school that had a shift system due to the high population. So I would be at school in the morning and return home in the afternoon to perfect my skills on the decks.

What inspired the name DJ Main Man Genious?
During my time in high school, I used to help with wiring cables at a certain hangout alongside a certain DJ called Main Man Lukeman. When the manager of the place found me playing music, he said I wasn’t the main man. So, when Main Man came, he asked me to buy him two bottles of beer and take the name. The rest is history.

Did your parents support your decision of becoming a DJ?
No. My parents are religious people, they didn’t love the idea of me being in night clubs, but they are happy I am doing well.

You were recently crowned Eastern DJ of the year at the Club DJ Championships, how did you feel?
It was my first award, but it is of little meaning to me.

What challenges do you face as a DJ?
Firstly, the pay is ‘small’ and we cannot afford hardware equipment that a professional DJ must have. We are also robbed in the nights when we are out working.

Why do artistes complain about DJs not playing their songs in the club?
Besides people having grudges, the only reason we don’t play some songs is that the songs are not mastered or well-balanced so when you play such a song, it sounds weird. But when there is a good song, we play it.

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing?
I want to be a businessman dealing in DJ equipment and events management.

How do you handle your female fans?
I am a private person. I always maintain professional conduct.
