I was born for comedy – Mcvex

Ronnie Mcvex (R) with his fan Sams Kaggwa.

RIBCRACKER: Comedian Ronnie Mcvex shared some time with his fan Sams Kaggwa.

Where did your entertainment career start from?
I started with a group called Brain Wash Comedy, a bunch of young talent. We had shows at Sabrina’s every Tuesday but it was not easy maintaining an audience. At times we would give our friends transport to and from the show. We also went to Club Silk for a monthly show and it is here that Herbert Ssegujja Mendo spotted me and invited me for a Fun Factory show. They liked what I did and took me on with time.

But we see you with Fun Factory and also Laftaz.
Fun Factory has been a strong anchor to my success and Laftaz accommodated me and took me on as a brother. I’ve also started hosting the comedy feast at Benrich Lounge every Tuesday.

Who is your inspiration in the comedy business?
I have a number, but mostly Pablo. That man is a legend.

Why comedy?
I was born for this, so I cannot run away from it and besides, it is a business.

Every artiste has stage fright. What do you do to overcome yours?
I am a holy person so I first pray backstage then head to the washrooms to ease myself.

How different are you from other comedians?
I am always smart, confident and I do not speak dirty.

You always dress smartly. Are you trying to impress the ladies?
I branded myself that way. And good enough, the audience appreciates me that way. Besides, I respect my job because it puts food on my table and pays my bills. So if other people dress well going to office, I also have to dress for my office.

You seem to do more of hosting than acting lately. Why?
I always say, if it is not Ronnie Mcvex at your event, then you just had a mere gathering. I also noticed I am one of the most sought after events host. I think it comes with exhibiting good work.

If you were not a comedian, what would you be?
(Laughs). Probably an IT guy because it is what I studied. But my father saw a journalist in me, my mum saw a lawyer, but God molded me into a “Joy Activist”.

Speaking of studies, what schools did you go to?
I went to Mbarara Junior School for my primary education, went to Ntare School for O-Level, Mbarara High School for my A-Level. That’s where fate saw me at MUK doing Information Technology.

What has been your best skit ever?
I have quite a number. The one that gave me roars was a show in Rwanda when I wowed the audience with a description of how dance is related to science. Also, a mimmick of NTV’s Frank Walusimbi always gets me a great reception.

Congratulations on the birth of your child. How many children do you want to have?
All children are blessings from God. I can’t dictate the number now but I am sure I will have children I will be able to take care of.

Who is your best comedian?
I really don’t a favourite comedian. Every comedian who gives me a good performance at any show is my favourite.

I have watched you sing, why don’t you start singing as well?
Hahaha. I am just a music fan. I am not eyeing music because I don’t want to render your favourite musicians jobless.

How do you know the mistakes you have done on stage?
I always watch the clips and correct where I went wrong.

What do you think of Uganda’s comedy industry?
The industry is growing. I’m positive about it. However, we (comedians) still have more work in terms of crafting and exploring more.
