The music video money – Gravity Omutujju ft David Lutalo

y

In brief, this is a video that documents the daily struggles Ugandans go through in their search for money. The combination, though from different worlds, combines seamlessly and pulls off a job not too easy. For many, Gravity Omutujju and David Lutalo is a combination that would have been impossible many years ago. Yet, through constant re-invention by David Lutalo, it is now a possibility, and a smooth one at that.
The video starts off with Gravity making the leap into the sky as if to defy the Newtonian laws of gravity. A viewer is then presented a mélange of different occupations, all show-casing the different sides of the hustle and bustle in the city. You have the taxis, the boda bodas, the market vendors and the long treks to and from work.
Despite the fact that the lighting and colouring is superbly generated, anyone with high expectations will have a bone or two to pick with this video. Could it have done more? Could it have broken away from the chains of predictability? Because a song about the search for money will always have a video of the occupations people carry out. Was there a possibility for this video to build on this foundation and take us by surprise with a different storyline? Or perhaps, there is a cap to the imagination of our video directors? All those questions keep lingering in one’s mind.
The reclaiming moments come towards the end. There is a combination of night scenes with a dance crew to back up Gravity. There is also that usage of a background wallpaper with all types of currency notes in different denominations. The wallpaper soon is a gallery of Ugandans photographed while busy at their jobs. This is art in itself. But wait a minute, where was David Lutalo in the video?
