Chinese soaps hit our local screens

Tell Chinese about a popular item and next day they will have their own version of the same. Some of the most popular programmes on Uganda TV are telenovelas that have gripped audiences, especially the females.
When you talk of China and TV, only martial arts and kungfu movies come to mind. But that is about to change after the Chinese have realised Ugandans’ love for soap operas. Last week, six Chinese soaps, to be broadcast on Star Times and other local stations were launched by the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhao Yali.
This is part of China’s cultural exchange programme, courtesy of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Radio and Television, Press and Publication.
Just like telenovelas that are dubbed into English, the Chinese shows have also been dubbed into “excellent” English according to Xinxing Pang, the StarTimes Global Chairman. They include shows like We Get Married, Beijing Youth, Struggle, The Heart Without Thieves, Who Is in Charge of My Youth, and The Battle to Save Marriage. We hope VJ Junior will also dub Luganda versions of the soaps.
